RATING: 5 Stars
Another one of my favourite Christian films is ‘The Ultimate Gift’, based on the novel by Jim Stovall. Both the film and movie have been around since 2008, so you may have head of it. But I believe that no matter how old this movie gets, it is always going to be one of my favourites!
It is a heart-warming story about a young spoilt Man, Jason Stevens, who upon his grandfather’s death, is expecting to receive a large sum of money as inheritance. Always having enough money in the bank to never have to worry over such a matter, Stevens is shocked when told that he will only receive his inheritance by completing a series of tasks – ‘gifts’, taking him on a journey of self-discovery, forcing him to decide what is most important in life: money or happiness?
There obviously has to be romance in this movie, but it is not the main plot, just more like a sub plot, sweet and not overbearing, designed to give Jason’s life a little more meaning and motivation. It is nonetheless a heart breaking part of the film, communicating that life is really a gift- a gift from God.
It is a beautiful story that clearly illustrates the value of life that is full of different gifts, be they the gift of family, love, work, laughter, friends, money when it is in its rightful place and the list just goes on. Stevens learns many lessons along the way that are just so easily overlooked in our busy lifestyle, which is also clouded by the things we take for granted. It is only that when we loose these things that we wake up and reassess out life, which is what Stevens had to do.
This film, along with ‘October Baby’ is one of those rare christian films able to be classified in the same category as those ‘box office’ films. The acting is great, and the fact that it has well known actors in it gives it that extra sophistication.
Every time I watch this movie, I am always thankful for the life God has given me, despite all the complaining, I realise that I am truly blessed.
